How to Start a Freelance Writing Career With Zero Experience

Starting a freelance writing career feels impossible when you have no experience. How do you get clients without a portfolio? How do you build a portfolio without clients?

I've been there. Here's how to actually start, even with zero experience.

Start writing immediately

You don't need clients to start writing. You need to start writing to get clients.

Start a blog. Write on Medium. Create content for yourself. Write about what you know. Write about what you're learning.

Every piece you write is practice. Every piece is a portfolio piece. Every piece proves you can write.

Create a portfolio from scratch

You don't need paid work to have a portfolio. Write sample pieces. Create content for fictional clients. Write about topics in your target industry.

Create 5-10 pieces that show your range. Different topics. Different formats. Different styles.

Your portfolio doesn't need to be from real clients. It just needs to show what you can do.

Pick a niche

When you're starting, being a generalist is harder. You're competing with everyone for everything.

Pick a niche. One industry. One type of writing. One type of client.

You'll learn faster. You'll build expertise. You'll stand out more.

Learn the basics

Writing is a skill. Learn the fundamentals. Grammar. Structure. Clarity. Style.

Read books on writing. Take courses. Study good writing. Practice.

You don't need a degree, but you do need to know how to write well.

Start with small clients

Your first clients won't be big brands. They'll be small businesses. Startups. Solo entrepreneurs.

These clients are easier to get. They're more willing to take a chance. They're great for building experience.

Start small. Build up. Work your way to bigger clients.

Use your network

Tell everyone you know that you're a freelance writer. Friends. Family. Colleagues. Former coworkers.

Most of your early clients will come through your network. People you know. People who know people.

Don't be shy about asking. Most people are happy to help if you ask genuinely.

Pitch strategically

Don't just send generic pitches. Research the client. Understand their needs. Show how you can help.

Write personalized pitches. Show you understand their business. Offer specific ideas.

Quality over quantity. Better to send 5 great pitches than 50 generic ones.

Set realistic rates

When you're starting, you won't charge premium rates. That's okay. You're building experience.

But don't work for free. Charge something. Even if it's low, charge.

As you gain experience, raise your rates. But start somewhere.

Deliver great work

Your first clients are your best marketing. Do great work. Exceed expectations. Be easy to work with.

Happy clients refer other clients. They give testimonials. They become repeat customers.

Your reputation is everything. Protect it.

Keep learning

Writing is a craft. Keep improving. Read. Practice. Get feedback. Learn from every project.

The better you get, the more you can charge. The more clients you can attract. The more opportunities you'll have.

The reality

Starting a freelance writing career with zero experience is hard. But it's possible.

Start writing. Build a portfolio. Pick a niche. Learn the basics. Start with small clients. Use your network. Pitch strategically.

It takes time. It takes persistence. But it's doable.

Start today. Write something. Share it. Pitch a client. Keep going.

That's how you start a freelance writing career with zero experience.
