Oana Jinga cofounded Dexory, a robotics company that has raised $280 million. She holds liberal arts and business degrees, spent six years in marketing, sales, and partnerships at Telefonica and Google, and had no robotics background when she started the company a decade ago.

Her story is not a motivational exception. It is a correction to an industry narrative that treats advanced technical credentials as the price of admission for building in physical AI.

The default assumption — and its cost

Robotics and AI recruiting often implicitly require PhDs, lab experience, and a pedigree that excludes most of the population. Jinga describes walking into early meetings as often the only woman in the room — a familiar pattern, but one compounded by the message that only engineers with deep technical resumes belong.

Dexory's trajectory reflects the unglamorous reality of hardware and robotics startups: long sales cycles, integration complexity, warehouse and logistics customers who care about uptime—not press releases—and capital requirements that dwarf typical SaaS seed rounds.

$280 million is not an overnight outcome. It is a decade of compounding credibility, product iteration, and investor confidence. The messy middle for robotics founders includes:

  • Explaining the same value proposition hundreds of times to skeptical operations leaders
  • Surviving supply chain disruptions and hardware revision cycles
  • Hiring engineers who respect commercial leadership enough to stay aligned

Jinga's background in partnerships is not a footnote. In enterprise robotics, partnerships with integrators, warehouse operators, and logistics providers often determine distribution more than product specs alone.

Talent pipelines beyond the lab

Jinga points to Romania's tradition of olympiad-style problem-solving competitions as evidence that diverse talent exists early — if industries create pathways to capture it. The next generation of scientists and builders may be more diverse than today's workforce, but only if private sector companies invest in early talent development rather than filtering exclusively for PhDs at hiring time.

What non-technical founders must still do

Commercial founders in deep tech cannot outsource understanding forever. Jinga's credibility grew because she learned enough robotics context to make informed product and hiring decisions — not because she pretended to be a research scientist.

If you are the non-technical cofounder:

  • Invest in technical literacy at the architecture level, even if you never write production code.
  • Hire technical leaders you trust to challenge you, not to defer to you on every decision.
  • Own customer discovery and revenue with the same rigor you expect from engineering sprints.

A broader founder lesson

The startup mythologies that dominate social media reward young engineers dropping out to code. Dexory's story rewards a different arc: corporate operator learns an industry, identifies a problem, builds a company over years, raises patient capital.

That arc is messier. It does not fit neatly into a tweet. It is also how a substantial portion of durable companies actually get built.

Robotics does not require a PhD. It requires persistence, team composition, capital, and the willingness to stay in rooms where you initially do not belong — until the room belongs to you.
